Proposed model for the transcriptional regulation of the hTERT core promoter during
the HTLV-1-induced leukemic process (see Discussion). The early steps of the leukemic
process during which HTLV-1 infected T-lymphocytes were expressing Tax and HBZ are
characterized by the recruitment of transcriptional activators (TA) by Tax. Later,
Tax expression is decreased and/or silenced and the TA become available to interact
with HBZ/JunD complexes. In both cases, HBZ/JunD complexes are interacting with the
Sp1 transcription factor bound to the GC boxes present in the hTERT core promoter.
